Thiruthuraipoondi is a municipality situated in Tiruvarur district within the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is primarily an agricultural town located to the south of Thiruvarur district and is approximately 28 km away from the district headquarters in Thiruvarur. Previously, there existed a situation where economically disadvantaged and middle-class students residing in Thiruthuraipoondi and the surrounding rural areas had to travel long distances to pursue higher education. In order to address this issue, Bharathidasan University initiated the establishment of a model college on July 18, 2011, offering five courses under the patronage of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Dr. J. Jayalalithaa. Subsequently, starting from the academic year 2015-16, postgraduate courses in M.A. Tamil and M.A. English were introduced, followed by the addition of the B.S.W. course in the academic year 2017-18.
This college is surrounded by numerous villages, and its student body primarily comprises individuals hailing from these villages. The parents of these students are predominantly engaged in casual agricultural and laborer occupations, with many being devoid of formal education. Consequently, they voiced their aspirations to the government, expressing the need for a college that could provide their children with quality education. In response, the government initiated the establishment of this college with the aim of enhancing the livelihoods of the local population. At present, the college occupies an expanse of 10.2 acres within the Vellure panchayat. The Tamil Nadu Government allocated 7.25 Crores for the construction of a new building, which was completed and inaugurated on April 5, 2018, by the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Edappadi K. Palanichamy.
